ABSTRACT:

Today, more and more people use location based services that offer free functionalities but pose a threat to privacy by sending location data to the service provider. This data gets analyzed to create user profiles that can be used for personalized advertisement, manipulation or even criminal goals. The problem with this data collection is that the users don’t get feedback about the data collection and what sensitive information can be extracted out of it. Because of that, many people ignore the privacy issues connected to location based services and mobile apps that share the location without having a reason to do so. In this thesis, a mobile application was developed that collects real or simulated location data to analyze it and use Privacy Nudges to inform the user about the potential of the collected data. This app forms a base for a study that measures the impact of these Privacy Nudges on the user’s attitude towards location privacy.
