Approach

The overall intent of this research is to enhance human machine interactions. To this end we:

  • conduct user studies
  • design prototypes on newly available sensory technologies
  • develop human computer interface technologies based on visual paradigms, non-speech sounds and tactile feedback

Topics

  • Subject-based evaluation methods: Fitts'-law type performance tasks, subjective evaluations, eye-tracking studies.
  • Design of commodity sensor interactions on mobile devices:

    • Optical marker tracking
    • Optical flow
    • Motion based sensing using accelerometers and magnetic field sensing

  • Custom technology for preliminary study of future commodity technology capabilities
  • Design space principles for pre-prototype feasibility evaluations
  • Augmented reality applications for mobile technology
  • Physical and pseudo-physical models for sound synthesis and sonification in interactive applications
  • Tactile and tangible interactions and enactive interface design
  • Believability and sensorimotor integration
  • Interactive public displays and digital signage
