Comparing possibilities and effects on UX for Data Visualization in VR

Abstract: With the development of technology, Virtual Reality(VR) is becoming more and more common. Different from applying in specific areas like military and medical years ago, it is widely used now in entertainment and business areas in daily life. Moreover, with the explosion of the data, the demand for data exploration is increasing. Therefore, it is time to bring VR into the data visualization area. As 2D visualization is still the mainstream, it is meaningful to discover if VR visualization has different effects from 2D visualization on User Experience, and compare the possibilities and effects on User Experience for data visualization in VR.

In this thesis, we implemented a data visualization toolkit that could be deployed both on a 2D display and VR display. This toolkit could convert the data file to a graph with the high-level grammar of graphics. In terms of the VR device, we selected an Android-based low-price VR device Oculus Go, as most existing VR visualization toolkits only support the Windows-based platform.

Afterward, a user study with six conditions was conducted, visualizing 2D car data, 2D basketball data, and 3D car data respectively in VR and 2D conditions. Partici-pants (N=25) during the experiment for this study answered three questions in each condition, considering the domain value, relationship, and understanding of the data.

As a result, we found that people answered the questions of 2D data more correctly in VR than 2D display. There is no significant effect in 3D data visualization. It also showed that gender, age, and VR experience affected user experiences.
