YouTube QoE: From Crowdsourcing Studies to QoE Monitoring

The shift from unreliable media streaming to reliable HTTP (via TCP) streaming make waiting times one of the key QoE influence factors in the domain of web-based video streaming. In case of insufficient network conditions, the video rebuffering make the video freeze for some time and then the video play out restarts. This is referred to as stalling. In this talk, we particularly consider the YouTube service as one of the prevailing online video portals in the Internet. The primary focus of the YouTube QoE model here is its application for QoE monitoring within the network, e.g. by an ISP as trigger for QoE management. Therefore, subjective user studies are designed taking into account potential influence factors on YouTube QoE. In particular, we will take a closer look at the impact of stalling as well as initial waiting times (to fill up the video buffer before the video play out starts). Furthermore, we utilize crowdsourcing providing a large pool of human subjects to conduct the tests, but the remote test users are also be considered properly. After analyzing the user ratings which are the key influence factors on YouTube QoE, simple QoE models and its corresponding mapping functions between those influence factors and the YouTube QoE can be derived. Based on these QoE models, the last part of this talk introduces QoE monitoring approaches and the need for deep-packet inspection for accurate QoE predictions from packet traces. Beyond the results achieved so far, this talk also aims at discussing open issues in the context of YouTube QoE.


Tobias Hossfeld studied computer science at the University of Wuerzburg, Germany. He finished his PhD on performance evaluation of future Internet applications and emerging user behavior in 2009. He is heading now the FIA research group "Future Internet Applications" at the Chair of Communication Networks in Wuerzburg. He has been visiting senior researcher at FTW in Vienna with a focus on Quality of Experience research. His main research interests cover the measurement modeling, and analysis of social networks, crowdsourcing platforms, content distribution networks and clouds, as well as the design of network and traffic management solutions. Furthermore, investigations on Quality of Experience for Internet applications like Skype, YouTube, Web Browsing or cloud applications in general are one of the major research topics.
