Neural Correlates of Degraded Audiovisual Stimuli

Communicating via video and watching video clips are part of everyone's lives, and increasingly so. Knowing more about how perception of video and audio quality works in the brain is of interest for neurophysiological research, as well as the implications are for the communication and multimedia industry. This talk is about an innovative method of measuring quality.

Classic methods for measuring the perceived quality of a video clip rely on a subjective rating, given by a  perceiving person. This person's rating may be influenced by expectations and other factors. In order to measure at an early stage of the perception process, before other factors can mix in, brainwaves can be recorded on the scalp. Using the method of event-related potentials (ERP), previous studies had shown that it is possible to find changes in the cortex in relation to changes in video or audio quality.

The presented study was the first to use this while combining video clips with audio. Results showed that this experimental design can in fact be used for bimodal stimuli. This means that research can look into how perceived video quality and perceived audio quality influence each other from a less subjective viewpoint.
