How to understand and measure preference formation – a case of high image quality preference estimation

The aim of the presentation is to give an overview on how to approach visual tasks that are highly subjective and depended of preferences. The evaluation of high-level image quality will be presented as an example case. This is a good example, since when the changes in images are small, the image quality estimations depend on subjective preferences instead of, for example, noticing the artifacts or being able to retrieve information from an image. Furthermore, high image quality estimation makes it possible to examine the process of preference formation in a controlled setting, which can be related to numerous studies on scene perception and imaging science. The methods that will be presented are a highly subjective qualitative approach and objective eye tracking methods. I will go through how these two different approaches can complement each other and enhance of knowledge of high image quality estimation as well as preference formation.


Jenni Radun is a PhD student at the institue of Psychology of Evolving Media and Technology Research Group at University of Helsinki. She is interested in understanding people’s behavior and subjective experiences in certain environments. The main areas of expertise are perception, visual attention, scene viewing, visual cognition and decision making. The methods include eye tracking, quantitative and qualitative methods, and psychometrics. The application areas are, for example, image quality, HCI, social interaction studies and reading experience.
