The Media Experience model

The talk will start by defining and discussing the aspects of
Immersive Media Technology. The ICT and digital media industry is
currently changing towards becoming user centric attempting to
optimize the users Quality of Experience. Convergence of the media and
ICT industry has led to a paradigm shift away from using the network
centric QoS as quality measure for networked media handling towards
putting into place a quality measure covering the end to end points in
the multimedia system as well as considering context. The media
industry is all about content and its users consuming ever more rich
digital media on a plethora of different devices over various
networks. The user’s expectation has been driven toward increasingly
higher quality, including dependability and security. This drive gives
rise to the problem of defining, modelling and measuring the quality
both for the users and the providers. These differ, especially as the
context is important for the user, however, the context often remains
unknown for the creator, content owner and provider. This is also true
for the network conditions and device capabilities at the users end.
Another problem is differentiating between the technical quality
assessment, measuring degradations due to system parameters such as
capture, media processing and network conditions as opposed to the
actual aesthetic quality intended by the creator.
The new target of our research is immersive media, as it is our contention that QoE is fully applicable to new digital media and to increasingly immersive experiences. Immersive media technology experience (IMTE) is an emerging field that describes and defines this work. Its intent is to support natural interactions between the user and environment by enriching traditional interactive audio and visual presentations with novel modes of interaction, such as haptics, olfactory, and taste. The goal is the digital recreation of real-world presence. Achieving this goal will require a multidisciplinary effort that draws from such disciplines as media technology, ICT, and media studies, and incorporating core competencies from fields as diverse as communications, information retrieval, entertainment, and social networks. In the context of IMTE, which follows content from capture and representation through delivery to the user and into the business model, QoE is seen as an overriding tool for monitoring and managing the user experience at every interface between adjacent model layers in the media experience model.
Andrew Perkis received his Siv.Ing and Dr. Techn. Degrees in 1985 and 1994, respectively. In 2008 he received an executive Master of Technology Management in cooperation from NTNU, NHH and NUS (Singapore). Since 1993 he has held the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Telecommunications at NTNU and as full professor since 2003. Currently he is focusing on Multimedia Signal Processing, specifically within methods and functionality of content representation, quality assessment and its use within the media value chain in a variety of applications. He was one of the founding authors of concepts such as Universal Multimedia Access and Quality of Experience (QoE). He is also involved in setting up directions and visions for new research within media technology and entertainment as well as directions for innovations in Immersive Media Technology Experiences. He is member of The Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences (NTVA), senior member of the IEEE, member of ACM and member of The Norwegian Society of Chartered Engineers (TEKNA). He is Vice Chair of the COST Action IC1003 (QUALINET) which gathers more than 150 researchers in a consortium related to QoE issues in multimedia systems and services.
