The Effect of Feedback on Location Sharing and Perceptions of Privacy

Location-based online services offer many benefits in exchange for users’ current position. However, it also opens the possibility for their private information to be abused. Protecting one’s location identity whilst using online services is a great concern to users. Many solutions have already been presented from location obfuscation, data protection laws, and offering more privacy options. Additionally, various privacy feedback exist to offer users the knowledge of when their location is being accessed raise awareness of the privacy settings whilst using location sharing systems. This paper presents a user study with the aim of examining the change in users’ privacy behaviour when presented with different variations of privacy feedback used when sharing their location. To conduct this study additional location privacy settings and two different types of privacy feedback were implemented to the Firefox mobile operating system. Furthermore, a privacy questionnaire analysis was conducted.
