Key Performance Indicator systems are used in almost all areas to track, communicate and control the performance and goals of projects and small and large companies. Young innovative companies, so called startups, oftentimes do not use KPIs to track their progress in early stages. IT based startups could easily implement KPI measurement to improve their products, track their goals and increase transparency. When they also offer an mobile App they could benefit from using notifications to incentivize and control user activity.
In this work the impact of the design of push notifications on user-initiated KPI metrics is examined. For this a KPI logging system was implemented at a crowdsourcing startup that allowed the sending of push notifications and the measurement of user events. An experiment was conducted to test the impact of 12 different notification designs with users in-field. Additionally a subjective questionnaire was used to get more insights into how users perceived the notifications.
