ABSTRACT:

The yearly Blizzard Challenge is testing the current state of different speech synthesis systems. Recently they started testing the quality of synthetic voices in audiobooks. As for now, these challenges are primarily designed for adults only. In this thesis I develop and present the test for children. I introduce certain evaluation methods for adults and how to use them to develop an evaluation method for primary-school pupils. Children are generally interested in participating in scientific research. A questionnaire was developed and tested in 5 different classes.  The questionnaire evaluates the overall quality of different synthetic speech generated by different systems. Concluding I give some ideas on how it’s possible to expand the method for even younger children who cannot read yet.
