A Comparison Study Between Control Centers for Autonomous Delivery Robots and the ones from Already Established Industries

ABSTRACT:

Mobile delivery robots are on the verge of becoming a part of our daily lives and with the tremendous potential they will provide to society, it is safe to say that they are here to stay. Mobile autonomous robots can already be seen driving around in major cities’ sidewalks either to deliver an item or to help its owner carry their groceries. Given that most of these robots will be completely autonomous, meaning that they will require minimal human operation, the robots will require some sort of monitoring and surveillance to avoid any unnecessary complications. With this monitoring and surveillance, these robots will require human operators to supervise them from a control center. The challenge here was to analyze and explore the lessons learned from other industries and apply them to control rooms within the robotics industry. Researching and analysing current control centers in the industry was a definite requirement to gain a better understanding of the robotics industry. Finally, interviews were set up with three of the companies that are the current leaders in the mobile robotics industry, Starship Technologies, TeleRetail and Piaggio Fast Forward. The findings granted possibility to compare and contrast traditional control centers against the up-and-coming robotics control rooms. At the same time, these findings developed an understanding on how the robotics industry capitalizes on the mobile robots’ powerful improvements, as well as how it has and will continue to provide improvements for humanity in the near future.
