Evaluating the use of gamification in the transportation industry

ABSTRACT:

Gamification is perceived as a powerful tool to engage and motivate users and more companies are trying to apply it to their current solutions. Unfortunately most companies have been unsuccessful to properly implement and gamify their systems.In this paper a gamified solution is implemented in a real world use case, the mobile driver application of Blacklane. When thinking of our solution a comparison was drawn with the solution of a similar company, Uber to gather initial input. We then designed a gamified solution for this application based on Blacklane’s KPIs to engage drivers and motivate them to perform better. Along the process we conducted several studies in order to evaluate each feature that was released. Studies used are two likert scale questionnaires based on SDT. The first questionnaire defines questions that aim to measure
user motivation and the result is presented as a scale between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The second questionnaire defines questions that aim to measure basic needs satisfaction and the result is presented as a score. A/B tests were used as an extra evaluation instrument by creating a control group and an experimental one to test specific features success. Finally the data logs were used to observe the changes in performance.
