Comparison of Subjective Quality Evaluation Methods When Investigating Spatial Audio Quality in Non-Standardized Environments

When choosing a subjective evaluation method in multimedia quality evaluation, researchers tend to use their favorite methods for most purposes, although there might be another more suitable method. A literature review and expert interviews have been done to investigate criteria for method comparison and to investigate researcher’s behavior of method selection. The results and guidelines for method selection are given in the first part of this talk. In a new research project on spatial audio quality in non-standardized environments different methods will be applied to conduct different subjective experiments. Aim of this project is to evaluate the difference between perceived spatial audio quality in standardized and non-standardized listening environments. In this second part of the talk the basic ideas in this project and the benefits of having an instrument to choose suitable research methods for your research question will be presented.


Kristina Kunze is researcher at Ilmenau University of Technology, Department of Electronic Media Technology and at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology. Her research interests are subjective audio/visual quality evaluation, method comparison and statistical data analysis. She graduated from Ilmenau University of Technology in Mediatechnolgy in 2009 and started as researcher at the University. Recently she started her work in the DFG project about audio quality in non-standardized environments. Prior to that she did several subjective quality evaluations in European and industrial projects.
