Error-prone Voice and Graphical User Interfaces in a Mobile Application

Location: Auditorium 1, TEL, Ernst-Reuter-Platz 7, 20th floor

SPEAKER: Michael Minge (Prometei, TU-Berlin)

Speech and Touch are more and more used as alternative input methods in today’s mobile applications. Previous work has shown that modality usage is affected by the effectiveness and efficiency of voice user interfaces (VUI). However, in these studies the effectiveness of the graphical user interface (GUI) is usually held constant.

This talk presents an experimental study with a smart phone-based application investigating the influence of both, speech and touch screen errors, on modality choice and user’s perceptions. The results show significantly increasing speech usage in the presence of GUI errors. Regarding mental effort and perceived pragmatic quality differences only emerged, if errors affect both, VUI and GUI.

Michael Minge studies the masters course "Human Factors" with a focus on multimodal interaction and user experience. Previously, he has obtrained a diploma in Psychology with focus on media research and media pedagogy from Freie Universität Berlin.
