Design and Implementation of a Multivariate Testing System for Android Applications

The talk introduces a remote usability testing system for Android applications that was developed in the frame of a bachelor's theses. The implemented system enables application developers to create and distribute interface variants for their applications to test them in-field, used by real end-users, without requiring any interaction with the user. Multiple interface variants can be tested in parallel and return logs of usage data created automatically, allowing developers to compare them with regard to their usability. The developed system was also designed to be easily usable by application developers. 

In a small study using the system, we were able to show statistically significant differences in usability between different interface variants. The results lead to the conclusion that the system can be employed to conduct large scale remote usability tests of smartphone applications. As an addition to the modern developers' toolset, such a system could enable and promote the usability testing of mobile applications' interfaces faster and cheaper than ever before.
