ABSTRACT:

We present Creature Teacher, a virtual reality (VR) animation system. Virtual articulated 3D creatures are animated within an immersive VR environment. Users directly manipulate the creature by moving its body parts with their hands. Cyclic movements are recorded and played back automatically. Users animate one body part after another. With this generic approach, animations can be prototyped from scratch, i.e. starting from a rigged 3D model with nearly arbitrary topology. Creature Teacher combines the speed of performance-based animation with the expressiveness and generality of low-level joint control. Our approach of taking cyclic movements as an input allows for quick creation of smooth looking cyclic motions.
