Prosody – Analyzing the Hidden Information in Speech

LOCATION: Auditorium 1, TEL 20, Ernst-Reuter-Platz 7, 20th floor

Date/Time: 23.11.2015, 14:15-15:00

SPEAKER: Vered Silber-Varod (Open University of Israel)

ABSTRACT:

As human listeners, we bring many sources of information to the interpretation of a message, including prosody – the information gleaned from the timing and melody of speech. In the present lecture, I will focus on recent findings from two studies on prosodic phenomena related to the fact that speakers interact in a conversation – thus, prosody in interaction. In one study, we analyzed the acoustic characteristics of the role one plays in therapeutic sessions. In another study, we examined genre and role effects on silence metric within unbalanced dialogues, i.e dialogues between speakers with different participation levels. Within the realm of these studies, we compiled the first Hebrew Map-Task corpus.
