Assessing the impact of inaccurate decision support systems on expert behavior and decisions

ABSTRACT:

Decision support systems (DSS) are enjoying widespread adoption and increasingly support experts' work, but errors within or caused by them have been study. To better understand how these inaccuracies impact experts' behavior and decisions a quality of context model was constructed with three parameters: raw information quality, cover rate and misleadingness. Based on this a controlled online experiment was conducted within which physicians had to treat hypothetical cases while seeing inaccurate medication suggestions. It was found that RIQ and CR signicantly increase patient outcomes and reduce required time and to the contrary a high misleadingness leads to decreased patient outcomes and more time being required.
