 This talk presents the basics of modern cryptography in both its symmetric and asymmetric forms, including some of its mathematical foundations. The fascinating history of PGP and its inventor, Phil Zimmerman, is traced, and current versions of PGP and its open-source variant GPG are introduced. In this context, the important issue of open-source software for security-sensitive applications is discussed. A large part of the talk deals with the installation of PGP/GPG and the first steps towards its effective and efficient usage in daily life, encouraging the audience to adopt more secure practices in their daily computing life.
