Evaluation of Three Mobile Adaptive Systems to Compare the Impact of Adapting Speed, Content, Incentives and Interface on User Experience

User experience is one of the main factors of any product's success, gaining more attention in the field of Human-Computer Interaction over the past decades. Promoting better usability and user productivity leads the computer systems to have a better user experience, therefore, addressing usability issues is necessary. A potential solution to usability and performance problems is system adaptation. However, it is crucial to choose the right adaptation method and optimize the result. In this thesis, we define an adaptation model with four dimensions as the focus of adaptation. We evaluate three mobile games to compare the impact of adaptation in the dimensions SpeedContentIncentivesand Interfaceby performing a laboratory experiment with 31 participants. The result of the evaluation shows a statistically significant difference between the impact of adaptation in dimensions Contentand Speedon UX. This difference was observed in the games with a high focus on user’s dexterity and reaction, and with less cognitive load. Based on the findings, we concluded that the dimension of adaptation should be chosen based on the context of use, system characteristics and the nature of tasks. The games that rely on the user’s memory, similar to games with less progression feedback are less likely to prove a change in UX due to adaptation in the studied dimensions.
