TITLE: Data visualization and public space: designing for engaging information-augmented shared environments

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The constant development of ubiquitous computing has enabled the pervasive integration of sensing and display technologies in our shared public spaces. At the same time, there is an ever-increasing amount of data related to urban life, generated by evolving social, environmental or political processes in our virtual and physical environments. Combining visualisation as a means to represent data in original and intriguing ways, and using ubiquitous technologies for displaying, sensing and interaction, offers new possibilities to enrich our experience in urban life. Nina’s investigation is focused on exploring and conceptualising design strategies and factors that promote engaging experiences with data visualisation in public space beyond the fascination of playful interactions. In particular, she is interested in studying how visualizing in-situ cues and patterns of information associated to shared physical spaces helps people to understand the relationships between people, information and the spaces they inhabit, with the ultimate foal to raise awareness, spark discussion and reflection, and/or motivate positve attitudes.
