On Quality Evaluation of Long Duration Audio Visual Content
LOCATION: Auditorium 1, TEL, Ernst-Reuter-Platz 7, 20th floor
SPEAKER: Ulrich Reiter
ABSTRACT:
Perceived quality plays an ever increasing role in the provision of multimedia content and services. In contrast to traditional QoS-approaches, which usually look at technical parameters only, perceived quality (or QoE - Quality of Experience) approaches put the user into the focus of quality measurement. Most traditional subjective quality assessment methodologies however are based on the use of very short excerpts of content for quality evaluation, an approach that is not necessarily representative of a typical media consumption situation.
This presentation gives an introduction to some aspects of long duration audiovisual content and its quality evaluation, and describes a recently developed assessment methodology along with some interesting results.
BIO:
Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Reiter is a researcher and lecturer working in the
fields of audiovisual quality perception, subjective assessment
methodologies, and interactivity issues in audiovisual applications at
the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in
Trondheim, Norway. He holds a PhD in media technology from Technical
University Ilmenau and a Master degree in electrical engineering from
RWTH Aachen, both Germany. Ulrich was the development coordinator for
the cross-platform, object-based, multicore-processing, and real-time
audio rendering engine TANGA used in the IAVAS I3D MPEG-4 player. More
recently, he has developed advanced methodologies for the subjective
assessment of perceived video- and audiovisual quality. Ulrich is the
author or co-author of more than 60 articles for scientific books,
journals, and conferences.
Since 2011, Ulrich is the
deputy leader of Working Group 2 of COST action IC1003 'QUALINET'
which investigates mechanisms and models of human perception. Ulrich
is a member of the Audio Engineering Society, and a senior member of
the IEEE. He has been appointed “Distinguished Lecturer” by the
IEEE Consumer Electronics Society for the 2013/2014 term.
Ulrich's current research focus is on cross-modal effects in
audiovisual media, on the influence of content and content duration on
perceived quality, and on the related assessment methodologies.
