On the Relevance of User Characteristics for Android App Preferences - The Role of Privacy

LOCATION: Auditorium 1 , TEL, Ernst-Reuter-Platz 7, 20th floor

Date/Time: 26.05.2014, 14:15-15:00

SPEAKER: Benedikt Lecheler

Studies suggest that user attitudes towards privacy issues depend on a number of personal user characteristics while using smartphones. Yet, research has not fully understood this relationship. Therefore, this thesis examines how such user characteristics influence choices made regarding privacy-critical issues when picking Android applications. Two studies were conducted: A multi-dimension questionnaire measuring ICT-relevant user characteristics was refined and validated in an online survey. Subsequently, this questionnaire was used to assess the importance of user characteristics of a second set of participants in an experimental lab study. Results show that ICT anxiety matters, and that users with high anxiety pay much attention to user reviews when choosing an app.
