Using electroencephalography (EEG) to map flow experience and the role of attentional mechanisms

ABSTRACT:

Although not originally designed as an explanation of media enjoyment, the Flow Theory (FT) has been broadly used in the field of media psychology to investigate issues like how does enjoyment occur during media exposure and why does it differ among individuals. In this talk I will present a research project aimed to investigate the role of attentional mechanisms during flow. Objective (EEG) and self-reported measurements will be combined to investigate the subjective experience of flow in three experimental conditions: frustration vs. “flow” vs. boredom.

BIO:

Elena Núñez Castellar received her degree in Psychology in 2006. In 2011 she obtained her degree of Doctor in Psychology from the Ghent University. During her PhD she got broad experience with research methods in cognitive neuroscience, namely EEG (electro-encephalography). Since 2012 she joined the research group for Media & ICT (iMinds-MICT) as a full-time researcher in the Games at School (G@S) project and currently works in a project aimed to develop a standard platform for augmented reality applications (GIPA ). She has supervised projects aimed to conduct fundamental research such as Serious games under the microscope and Exploring Gendered Play, and also multidisciplinary applied projects into immersive media usage like ASPRO+ and Telesurgery.
