Evaluating different onboarding modalities based on user expertise and personality trait

LOCATION:  TEL, Auditorium 1 (20th floor), Ernst-Reuter-Platz 7, 10587 Berlin

Date/Time: 04.04.2017, 09:00-09:45

SPEAKER: Hsiu-Ju Lin

Onboarding is difficult and fragile. It is one of the most crucial elements of every application. Very often, it determines whether a user will stick to an application or not because of how easy it is to use. In this talk we focus on the evaluation of the onboarding tools for the web-based SAP internal productive system, PPMS Light. In order to design a better way to onboard the employees, three onboarding tools were designed for a study. Two groups of employee i.e. expert and novices users were chosen for the study in order to understand the different preference based on user expertise. The correlation between personality and three onboarding tools is of high interest. The results showed that onboarding helps the employees but no matter which one is presented, the effect is the same. More specifically, the novices prefer Video more than Inline Hinting but the experts do not have any significant preference. The significant negative correlations were found between Agreeableness and Inline Hinting as well as Conscientiousness and Neuroticism and Guided Tour. Further research could be carried after design iteration of onboarding tools on the real application to get not only the feedback regarding the specific onboarding tools for the experiment but also general insights for the modalities.
