Human Factors in Secure Programming

ABSTRACT:

Writing code requires developers to make decisions that impact their users’ security and privacy. Previous research revealed that many developers - despite being computer experts - are rarely security experts. In this talk I will give an overview of security challenges for programmers. I will illustrate root causes for many of the problems we have seen in the past and make suggestions for what we as security researchers can do to improve application security.

Biography:

Sascha Fahl is head of the Information Security institute at Leibniz University Hannover. Previously, he led the Usable Security and Privacy Research group at CISPA, Saarland University. His research focuses on the intersection of computer security and privacy mechanisms with human factors, involving large-scale analyses of the Internet and software repositories and user studies with end-user and information security workers.
