ABSTRACT:
Increasing
digitalization is more and more frequently found in everyday
functions. In this respect it is commonly assumed that a broader
selection will automatically lead to a higher level of user
satisfaction
However, mobile devices offer only a limited amount of screen space
for what reason a broader selection is inevitably combined with more
user interaction. This can lead a cancellation of the selection
process and therefore to a negative user experience. This issue can be
countered by recommender systems. Those provide a pre-selection based
on collected data and can therefore offer specific, target-oriented
suggestions.
This thesis will show that it is possible to
improve the usability of mobile applicationsby the use of a
recommendation list. The usability has been examined in regards to
thethree criteria of ISO-9244-11. In a study with 30 participants two
different methods havebeen investigated. The first method offers a
list which is sorted by recommendations. The second methodprovides a
randomly sorted list.
This thesis will show that by using
a recommendation list it is possible to increase theusability in every
aspect of the ISO-9244-11: effectiveness, effciency and user
friendliness. This leads to the conclusion that a broader selection
does not automatically lead to a higher usability.
