Music, Expectation and Emotion: Psychophysiological Measurement and Statistical Modeling

ABSTRACT:

The talk will present an introduction to research on the link between musical expectations, induced emotions, and corresponding measurements. I will show results from a live concert experiment where continuous measurements of subjective experience and peripheral psychophysiology were undertaken. Within that context, also an information theoretic model was used to predict musical expectancies. Analyses tested and confirmed the hypothetical relationship between high information content musical events, the violation of musical expectations, and emotional reactions (psychologically and physiologically). Thus, musical structures leading to expectation reactions were also manifested in reactions at different synchronized emotion component levels. These results explain the role of musical structures in emotion induction, and additionally illustrate methodologies by which computational modeling procedures can be used to predict human perception and emotion. 



BIO:

Hauke Egermann is lecturer and research associate at the Audio Communication Group, TU Berlin since 2011. After graduating in systematic Musicology, Media and Communication Sciences at the Hanover University of Music and Drama (MA 2006), he studied Neurosciences at the Center for Systems Neurosciences Hanover and received his PhD in 2009. Subsequently, he joined the Music Perception and Cognition Laboratory, McGill University, Canada as Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2009-2011). His research interests are music perception and cognition, emotion measurement, online methods, and applied psychology.
