Perceptual Grouping: Selection Assistance for Digital Sketching

Digital sketching environments offer many possibilities for creating and modifying content. The ability to freely modify complex sketches at any point enables more fluid work compared to paper-based sketching. However, performing such modifications can still be time-consuming and cumbersome with existing digital sketching tools.  This problem is exacerbated on large interactive surfaces, where arm fatigue may play a role. In contrast to digital systems, humans are tremendously skilled at visually identifying object groups.  Groups of objects - perceptual groups - are identified effortlessly and nearly instantaneously. In our research, we make use of this ability and analyse sketches in respect to various perceptual features. We draw on insights from Gestalt Theory and Feature Integration Theory to identify perceptual groups in real-time during digital sketching. These groups are then used to suggest potential selection targets to users to facilitate interaction with digital sketches.


David Lindlbauer received his Bachelor' and Master's degree from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria Campus, Hagenberg. During his Master's, he spent an exchange semester at the University of Waterloo, Canada, working with Prof. Stacey Scott and Prof. Mark Hancock. After his Master's in 2012, he started his PhD at the Media Interaction Lab in Hagenberg under supervision of Prof. Michael Haller. David has now joined the Quality and Usability Lab in the Mobile and Physical Interaction group of Dr. Jörg Müller to pursue his PhD. His research interests include exploring new display technologies, input methods, sketch interpretation, gestural interfaces and physical activity promotion in the office environment.
