Computational Trust Methods for Security Quantification – Challenges and Approaches

ABSTRACT:

Computational trust provides means to support entities to make informed decision in electronic environments, where decisions are often subject to risk and uncertainty. Research in computational trust addresses the formal modeling, assessment, and management of the social notion of trust for use in risky electronic environments. Examples of such risky environments span from social networks to e-marketplaces to cloud computing service ecosystem.

In the first part of my talk, I will provide an in-depth insight into computational trust methods that are able to reliably quantify the security level of cloud service providers and transparently communicate that level to the users. The methods particularly consider business as well as end users' requirements along with complex specification of security assurances during security quantification. In the second part of my talk, I will demonstrate the application of computational trust methods in the field of cloud computing. At the end of my talk, I will outline a list of open problems in the computational trust domain and my group's future directions in this domain. 

BIO:

Dr. Sheikh M. Habib is a postdoctoral researcher at the Telecooperation lab and coordinator of the CASED Secure Services research area. Additionally, he is leading the Smart Security & Trust (SST) group as a part of the Telecooperation Lab since Sept. 2013. He joined the lab as a doctoral student in 2009 after obtaining his M. Sc. degree from Chalmers University of Technology in the same year. Sheikh obtained his doctoral degree from Technische Universität Darmstadt in 2013 for his work on computational trust mechanisms with focus on distributed service environments.
