Affordance++: Giving objects dynamic affordance through the user’s own muscles

ABSTRACT:

This thesis proposes extending the affordance of objects by allowing them to communicate dynamic behaviours, such as (1) motion (e.g., spray can shakes when touched), (2) multi-step processes (e.g., spray can sprays only after shaking), and (3) behaviours that change over time (e.g., empty spray can does not allow spraying anymore) through a prototype that supports these behaviours. Rather than enhancing every single object with mechanics, we implemented this by instrumenting only the user.  We do so, by stimulating the user’s arms using electrical muscle stimulation, which allows to actuate objects by actuating the user, and to perform movements while approaching the object, such as avoid touching objects that should not be contacted (e.g., a hot surface).
