Empirical and Computational Models for Adaptive Interaction Systems

Building adaptive interaction systems requires the recognition and modeling of the user's cognitive processes. In this talk, I will present work on empirical (i.e. sensor-based) and computational (i.e. knowledge-based) user models as well as the combination of both approaches for HCI applications. As one major example, I will present work on an EEG-based self-correcting gesture interface. This interface detects error potentials in the EEG signal in response to unexpected feedback resulting from the incorrect interpretation of a user's gesture. The system then employs different strategies to recover pro-actively from detected error states.
Dr. Felix Putze is a senior researcher with Prof. Dr. Tanja Schultz at the Cognitive Systems Lab of the University of Bremen. His research interests are adaptive human-machine interaction, cognitive user modeling and user state detection.
