Muscle-Plotter: Investigating electrical muscle stimulation as a spacial output technique for pen and paper interactions

This thesis explores creating an interactive pen and paper application using electrical muscle stimulation. The application, muscle-plotter, provides meaningful expressive output from a computer system in a mobile context. With muscle-plotter, users can engage in cognitively demanding tasks, such as solving math problems. In the simplest case, user inputs a math formula, prepares the plot area and later muscle-plotter steers user’s wrist to plot the function as the user sweeps the region holding the pen. Pen output persists on paper and allows electrical muscle stimulation output to build a larger whole. This example is further expanded into fitting lines through points, finding points of interest, etc. These core components are demonstrated in six different applications from different domains including a wind tunnel simulator. In our user study, participants drew random plots within 4mm accuracy and preserved accuracy up to 3 cycles per cm.
