Speech intelligibility measurements over VoIP channels

The IP-based packet switching technology (VoIP- services such as Viber, Skype etc.) can deliver speech transmission though wideband (WB; 50 Hz – 7 kHz)- and super-wideband channels (SWB; 50-1400Hz ) in contrast to the conventional landlines, which offers only a narrowband (NB) transmission (300 – 3400 Hz). It has already been shown that the ability to distinction between different fricative sounds (e.g. /s/ and /f/) is in the WB channel significantly better than in the NB channel. However, it has not yet been examined if the SWB channel brings advantages with respect to speech intelligibility in contrast to the WB channel. This bachelor thesis examines the influence of 27 telephone conditions on speech intelligibility. This work not only addresses the effects of bandwidth restriction but also the effects of codecs and their respective bit rates on speech intelligibility. To do so a closed listening test based on VCV logatomes is conducted. Moreover the results of the subjective listening test are compared to objective intelligibility and quality measures (POLQA intelligibly and POLQA standard).
