Tracking Innovation in Open Source Software Projects

LOCATION:  TEL, Auditorium 3 (20th floor), TEL, Ernst-Reuter-Platz 7, 10587 Berlin

Date/Time: 09.02.2017, 17:00-17:45

SPEAKER: Moritz Neeb (FU Berlin)

Although Open Source Software plays an important role in the global economy for more than two decades, there is currently no formal model available to understand decision processes that lead towards this success.
When investigating the motivation to contribute to a project, a question is how the loosely coupled network of developers manage to take group-decisions towards project profit. Some projects are existing since more than 20 years and are adapting their processes through innovations to keep up with the state of the art.
This talk is presenting the results of a qualitative analysis of the communication of 13 Open Source projects throughout ten years (2007-2016). Previous research on the topic "Innovation in Open Source Software" is set into a long-term context.
The results will show the different form and impact of certain innovation decisions, as well as the progress of the projects over time.
