ART - Augmented Reality for Tourism industry in a changing era

Post COVID-19 social distancing will have a critical impact on the tourism industry by reducing sold trips/tickets, increasing uncertainties, and limiting access to attractions/museums.

The ART project (Augmented Reality for the Tourism industry in a changing era) exploits Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies' capabilities to address these problems.

XR technologies are finally mature for large deploys, and lighter and lower-cost devices are available on the market. Moreover, the 5G network's introduction enables new possibilities for streaming high-quality content to AR devices connected to smartphones and real-time interactions in multi-users experiences.

Both of them could be majorly employed in a wide range of travel industry's use cases, providing inspiration, demonstrating incredible experiences, and creating a perfect way to promote destinations to inspire people to travel more.

ART core technologies will include AR, VR, Cloud, Web & Desktop Apps to create and provide an innovative solution that allows tour operators, tourism, and event managers, to enhance pre-sale and on-site customer experience. The project has been funded for 15 months, and it involves three different partners: Politecnico di Milano, Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM), FifthIngenium.

The target is to reshape how access to touristic attractions is planned to make it smarter, sustainable, and accessible for everyone. If successful, the project outputs will help the cultural tourism sector re-invent itself and survive global travel and tourism's immediate risk.
