Biography:
Dipl.-Des. (FH) Tom Bieling, born in 1979, studied Design at
the University of Applied Sciences, Cologne (Germany) and Universidade
Federal do Paraná, Curitiba (Brasil). During his previous
professional education as Digital Media Designer he already
concentrated on doing Design in its conception as an interdisciplinary
manner, whereby he perpetually intensified a research-oriented
approach concerning diverse Methods and cultural practices by and
through design, especially by means of exploring parameters as (body-)
language, signs and social dynamics. Besides numerous project
co-operations in the range of Communication-, Graphic- and
Information-Design (i.e. for the ministry of culture, federal state of
paraná, brasil), he curated and co-developed several design
exhibitions (amongst others at the Museum für angewandte Kunst,
Köln) and moreover works as a Manager of culture and host of cultural
events since the late 1990s. He currently focuses on design-relevant
coherence of methodology and didactics (q.v. his diploma key issue
Design and Dialogue, 2007) as well as perception of picture, behaviour
of reading and information concerning systems of digital communication
and display-technologies. Since october 2007 he lives and works
in Berlin as a designer and design research scientist at the Deutsche
Telekom Laboratories, where he also is a PhD candidate. He is also
founding member of the DRNetwork (Design Research Network).
